China Golden Week 2026: Train Deadlines, Apps & eSIM

The short answer: China Golden Week 2026 runs from October 1 to 7. If you plan to travel then, the important work happens before you land: check train-sale deadlines, verify your payment apps, save destinations in Chinese, and install mobile data that works on the apps you need.

China becomes difficult when a traveler first discovers its digital tools at baggage claim. A payment card that still needs verification, a sold-out train, or a hotel address saved only in Google Maps is inconvenient on a quiet Tuesday. During a nationwide holiday, it can consume half a day.

This is not a list of every app you could download. It is a deadline-first checklist for the predictable failures that can stop a Golden Week trip.

China Golden Week 2026 Dates

Two holidays sit unusually close together this year:

These are the dates in China's official 2026 public holiday calendar.

The gap between the holidays is only three days. They do not form one continuous official break. For planning transport and tickets, however, it is safer to treat late September and early October as one high-demand window.

For scale, China recorded 888 million domestic tourist trips during the combined eight-day National Day and Mid-Autumn holiday in 2025. That number is not a forecast for 2026, when the holidays fall separately. It does explain why waiting until arrival to organize transport is a poor plan.

Golden Week Train Deadlines: What to Do Now

Railway 12306 is piloting reservation requests on more than 200 trains using the Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed Railway and Beijing-Shanghai Railway. It is not a network-wide early-booking system. If the app offers it for your journey, it gives you an earlier chance to state which trains and seats could work. The official pilot announcement explains the current scope.

For an eligible train, open Ticket Reservation, labeled 预约购票, in the Railway 12306 app. Requests can be sent from 60 to 17 days before departure. The system processes them from 20 to 16 days before the train leaves. If a request is fulfilled, you must pay by 23:00 that day or the order is canceled. The official 2026 National Day rules explain both precise and flexible reservation modes.

Using those official windows, the Golden Week deadlines are:

*The normal presale period is 15 days including the departure date. The exact release time depends on the departure station. Check Me → On-Sale Time Inquiry in the Railway 12306 app.

If the app offers a reservation request and the window is open: rank several acceptable trains and use flexible time, journey duration, and seat-class choices when the exact service is not essential. A request is not a ticket, so keep notifications on and watch for the payment deadline.

If your train is not eligible, the window has closed, or your request is not fulfilled: use the normal sale date in the table. Railway 12306's current purchase guidance recommends setting a sale reminder and prefilling the passenger, train, and seat details. If your preferred option sells out, use the app's Standby, labeled 候补, and include acceptable alternative trains and seat classes.

Complete passport verification before either process begins. China's official guide for foreign travelers says passport details may be verified automatically or through a manual passport-photo review. Carry the same passport because it is also your boarding credential, and avoid making a non-refundable hotel or attraction booking depend on a train you have not paid for.

Book Major Attractions on Their Own Schedule

Transport is only one reservation problem. Major museums and attractions have their own release times, identity requirements, and official sales channels.

The Palace Museum, or Forbidden City, is a useful example because it does not sell same-day tickets. Its official international ticket page says tickets open at 20:00, seven days before a visit. Foreign visitors can book with a passport and must bring the original document to enter.

Do not assume every attraction follows the same rule. Check the attraction's official site shortly before its release date, use the same passport name and number throughout, and save the confirmation outside the booking app.

The Smallest Reliable China App Stack

You do not need every app recommended in a 30-minute travel video. You need one dependable tool for each job, plus a backup for the jobs that can stop your day.

Install the apps before departure. More importantly, open them, create the accounts, complete identity checks, bind payment cards, and save the first destinations. An icon on your home screen is not a completed setup.

1. Set Up Two Ways to Pay

Start with Alipay, then add WeChat Pay as a second path.

China's official mobile-payment guidance says foreign visitors can register with overseas phone numbers and bind eligible international cards. The issuing bank must approve the card verification, while supported cards, limits, and fees can vary by app and account.

Complete these steps before flying:

1. Register with a phone number you will keep active and complete any identity prompts.
2. Bind one card in Alipay and a second card or WeChat Pay as the backup.
3. Confirm that your bank can still send verification codes abroad.
4. Keep a physical card and a modest amount of RMB cash separate from your phone.

Cash and cards remain valid. Alipay and WeChat are still worth setting up because QR payment reaches small merchants and transport situations where an overseas card may be awkward to use.

2. Use a Local Map for the Actual Journey

Install Amap Global, also called Gaode Map, even if Google Maps is familiar.

Amap's international service supports multiple languages, local navigation, public transport, saved trip details, bilingual phrase cards, and emergency information. Many of its main traveler services work without an account, according to Shanghai's July 2026 service update.

The practical setup is:

• iPhone: use Apple Maps or Amap as the primary navigator.
• Android: use Amap as the primary navigator.
• Either phone: keep Google Maps only as a secondary reference when your connection can reach it.

Save each hotel under its Chinese name. Add the street address, phone number, nearest metro station, and the exact entrance or ride-hailing pickup point. Large railway stations, airports, parks, and compounds often have several gates that are far apart.

3. Register DiDi Before the Airport Pickup

DiDi Greater China has an English interface and accepts registration with an overseas phone number and international credit card. Ride-hailing is also available through Alipay and WeChat. Beijing's official DiDi instructions tell arriving passengers to use designated airport pickup areas.

Register before the trip, allow location access, and save the first hotel. At the airport, follow signs to the designated app-based ride pickup area before placing the request. The correct terminal is not always the designated pickup point.

For the first journey, compare three pieces of information before confirming:

• the hotel name in Chinese;
• the full Chinese address;
• the pickup and destination pins in DiDi.

If those do not agree, stop and correct the destination. The driver sees the pin you sent, not the hotel you meant.

4. Treat WeChat as Local Infrastructure

WeChat is useful even if nobody at home uses it. Hotels, guides, restaurants, attractions, and other local services may communicate through WeChat accounts or mini-programs. It also gives you a second mobile-payment path and another way to reach DiDi.

WhatsApp plays a different role: it keeps you connected to people who already use your normal number. It is restricted on ordinary mainland connections, and GreatFire's live record continues to classify the domain as mostly blocked.

5. Submit the Official Arrival Card for Free

China's National Immigration Administration now lets foreign travelers submit entry information online before arrival. You can use the NIA website, NIA 12367, or the official WeChat and Alipay mini-programs.

The service is free. The NIA has specifically warned about counterfeit arrival-card sites that charge travelers a fee. Use the official NIA arrival-card page, and save the submission record where you can reach it without internet access.

If you cannot complete it in advance, official devices and paper arrival cards remain available at ports of entry. Follow the current NIA instructions rather than a third-party form.

The Connection Matters More Than the eSIM Label

An eSIM is a digital SIM profile. The word eSIM does not tell you whether Google, WhatsApp, Gmail, or Instagram will work in mainland China. The data-routing arrangement does.

Guac's China eSIM plans use international routing, so Google, Gmail, WhatsApp, and other restricted services are reachable over Guac mobile data without adding a separate VPN. That does not change the hotel's Wi-Fi. If a global app stops working after your phone joins Wi-Fi, switch back to the travel eSIM's mobile data.

Do not assume every China eSIM behaves this way. Check the provider's routing promise before buying.

Install before you leave home

Install the Guac eSIM while you have dependable internet. Guac plans start when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at the destination, so installing the profile at home does not consume the China plan's travel validity.

Before departure:

1. Confirm that the phone supports eSIM and is carrier-unlocked.
2. Install the travel eSIM over home Wi-Fi and label it China Data.
3. Keep the home SIM enabled if you need verification texts, but turn off its data roaming.
4. Turn off automatic mobile-data switching.

After landing:

1. Turn on the travel eSIM, enable its data roaming, and select it as the data line.
2. Leave data roaming disabled on the home SIM.
3. Test Amap, Alipay, DiDi, and one restricted app before leaving the terminal.

Keeping the home SIM enabled can help with incoming verification texts, but your carrier decides whether those messages or any calls incur roaming charges. Check the home carrier's rules before the trip and avoid answering a normal cellular call unless you know the price.

Build an Offline Layer Under Every Critical App

The strongest phone setup still assumes that one app, account, battery, or network can fail.

Create one offline folder containing:

• secure passport, visa, and travel-insurance copies;
• the official arrival-card submission record;
• flight, train, hotel, and attraction confirmations;
• each hotel's Chinese name, address, phone number, and nearest entrance;
• bank, carrier, and travel-insurance support numbers;
• important account recovery codes and one trusted person's details;
• dietary, allergy, or medical information translated into Chinese.

Save the folder on the phone, not only in Google Drive, Gmail, or another cloud service. Share a copy with your travel companion or store an encrypted backup somewhere independent of the device.

Also save China's nationwide emergency numbers: 110 for police, 119 for fire, and 120 for medical emergencies. They are confirmed in the government's current guide for foreigners.

Check Your Power Bank Before a Domestic Flight

This small detail can remove your backup power at airport security.

Since June 28, 2025, the Civil Aviation Administration of China has tightened power-bank rules for domestic flights. Passengers may not carry a power bank with no visible CCC mark, an unclear CCC mark, or a recalled model or batch. The rule is stated in the CAAC's official notice.

If Golden Week includes a flight within mainland China, inspect the power bank before packing it. A CE, FCC, or other mark is not the CCC mark named in the domestic-flight rule. Do not make a non-compliant battery the only way you can keep tickets, maps, and payment apps alive.

Your Golden Week Phone Setup Timeline

Do this now

• Check the train table above. Send a reservation request if the app offers one for your train; otherwise set a reminder for the normal sale date.
• Install Alipay, WeChat, Amap, DiDi, and Railway 12306, then complete their identity and payment checks.
• Save the first hotel and every transport terminal in Chinese.

Seven days before each major attraction

• Check the official ticket-release time.
• Book with the passport details you will carry.
• Save the confirmation outside the booking app.
• For the Palace Museum, use the September 24-30 calendar above.

Before flying

• Submit the free official arrival card if required.
• Check device compatibility and install the China eSIM.
• Download an offline Chinese translation pack.
• Build the offline folder described above.
• Check how the home carrier charges for SMS and calls in China.
• Check any power bank against the CCC rule if taking domestic flights.

After landing

• Set the travel eSIM as the data line and enable its data roaming.
• Keep home-SIM data roaming off.
• Test payments, maps, ride-hailing, messaging, and bookings before leaving the airport.
• Follow signs to the designated DiDi pickup area.
• Keep the passport used for tickets easy to reach.

Should You Visit China During Golden Week?

If your dates are flexible and dense crowds would diminish the trip, move it outside October 1-7. That is the honest recommendation.

If your dates are fixed or the national holiday atmosphere is part of the appeal, go. Just reduce the number of ways the itinerary can fail. Do not make the trip depend on one famous attraction, one exact train, or a same-day transfer between cities.

The practical rule is redundancy: two payment methods, a local map plus an offline address, and critical records stored outside the apps that created them. Treat a train request as unfinished until it is paid, and carry the passport attached to every real-name ticket.

Preparation will not make Golden Week quiet. It will keep an expired verification code, a missing ticket, or unusable Wi-Fi from becoming the hardest part of the trip.
