Do You Need a Chinese Phone Number? What to Set Up Before You Fly

You can use Alipay, WeChat Pay and DiDi with a foreign phone number. You need a mainland +86 number only when a particular service requires it. That can save you an extra SIM purchase and an airport queue.

For a trip using those apps, our starting recommendation is Guac for mobile data, with your usual number kept active for verification texts. Confirm that your home carrier supports receiving SMS in China before relying on this setup.

Guac's China data uses international routing, so you can reach WhatsApp and Google over its mobile connection without a separate VPN. Which China apps need a Chinese phone number?

Start with what you intend to do:

China's official visitor guide confirms foreign-number support for mobile-payment registration and DiDi. Shanghai's Amap guidance confirms that its main visitor services work without logging in. The English 12306 registration form provides an email-based starting point.

The delivery entries follow Shanghai's app instructions; the park example comes from Beijing's municipal FAQ. Neither is a rule for every Chinese app or attraction.

Choose the setup that fits your trip

If you add a local SIM, use its +86 number for calls and texts and keep Guac selected for mobile data. That keeps WhatsApp and Google on Guac's internationally routed connection while local services can reach your Chinese number.

Adding a third plan takes planning. If your phone only supports two active lines, Guac, your home number and a local SIM cannot all stay active together. Switching off your home line can interrupt verification texts. A compatible spare phone can keep the local number available separately.

For foreign iPhone owners: Apple says iPhones purchased outside mainland China cannot install mainland-carrier eSIMs. International travel eSIMs are a separate option. Before buying a second device, ask the service whether it offers an official foreign-visitor booking route. For an occasional booking, that may solve the problem without another SIM.

Your data connection and phone number do different jobs

When you book a car after landing, three things may happen:

• Guac data loads the app and pickup map.
• Your registered number receives a login code, if requested and supported.
• Your contact number lets the driver reach you about the pickup.

A data-only travel eSIM supplies the first. It does not receive an ordinary SMS sent to your home number, and it does not turn that number into a Chinese one.

Keeping your home line active does not make its roaming free. Ask your carrier about incoming SMS, answered calls and other charges. Turn off data roaming for that line and use Guac as your mobile-data line.

Set up payments and rides before departure

Alipay: use your existing number and an eligible card

Alipay supports visitors linking international cards without a mainland phone number or Chinese bank account. Ant International confirms this directly.

Download Alipay, register with your country code and number, and follow the current card-linking and identity prompts. Keep access to your bank's authentication method as well: approving a card can involve a different check from signing into Alipay.

If a card fails, follow the error: an issuer decline belongs with your bank; an identity-review request belongs with Alipay. Buying a new SIM will not complete either check.

WeChat Pay: prepare the wallet as well as the account

Official Weixin Pay visitor guidance supports overseas numbers that can receive verification SMS. It also distinguishes international-card merchant payments from personal transfers and red packets.

Register, complete the security checks shown in the app, and add an eligible card. Then open any mini programs you intend to use: a ticket seller can ask for a different contact number even when your WeChat wallet is ready.

Keep a physical payment card and a cash backup for occasions when the app or merchant cannot complete a transaction.

DiDi: choose the mainland service

Use DiDi Greater China and its English interface. Beijing's official instructions support registration with an active Chinese or foreign mobile number.

Save your hotel's Chinese name and address and locate the airport pickup zone. Keep the registered number reachable where possible. If a driver call cannot reach your overseas number, use in-app messaging when available and ask airport staff to help identify the meeting point.

What to do when a form insists on +86

Meituan and Taobao Flash Shopping

Treat signup and delivery as separate steps. Try your country code at registration, then inspect the delivery-contact field before placing an order. Shanghai's instructions describe SMS signup for Meituan and a phone number attached to the delivery address for Taobao Flash Shopping. They do not confirm which foreign prefixes each flow accepts.

If the field rejects your number, ask your hotel whether staff can help place and receive the order, or order in person. Get their agreement before using the hotel's number. For frequent deliveries, arranging your own reachable local number may be more convenient.

Opening a service through Alipay or WeChat may simplify login, but it does not guarantee that the delivery form accepts the same number. Shanghai's delivery instructions

Attraction tickets

For Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven, Beijing's municipal FAQ gives a specific alternative to the +86-dependent Changyou Gongyuan route: bring your passport to the park's comprehensive service window for a staff-assisted ticket purchase. Official park-ticket guidance

For another attraction, start with its official visitor instructions or contact the venue. An overseas-booking page or staffed ticket option can solve the number problem, but availability and reservation rules belong to that venue. Do not assume the park example applies to the Forbidden City.

When getting a local SIM is the better choice

If essential bookings have no usable alternative, or you need regular local calls and deliveries, bring your passport to an official carrier store or a visitor counter offering SIM registration. Ask for a package with a usable +86 number, incoming verification SMS and the voice allowance you need. Shanghai's Pudong arrival guide lists short-duration visitor SIM options.

A Hong Kong +852 number will not satisfy a form that specifically requires mainland +86. Verify the number's country code before buying an add-on.

A concrete Guac example: 10 GB for 30 days

Your pre-departure checklist

Before installing, confirm eSIM compatibility and carrier-unlock status. Pick coverage for the full itinerary, including any Hong Kong or Macao stop. Then complete these four jobs:

1. Install Guac on dependable Wi-Fi. Follow the installation instructions and label the line “Guac China.”
2. Finish account setup. Register the core apps and link cards while you have access to home-number SMS and bank authentication.
3. Resolve required bookings. Choose the local-number or alternative-booking route for any service that rejects your number.
4. Save arrival details offline. Keep your hotel's Chinese address, tickets and transport instructions on the phone.

After landing, turn off Wi-Fi for your first mobile-data check. Open your map, load a website and send a message before leaving the terminal.

If the verification code never arrives

If the app loads but the code does not arrive, work through the number receiving the SMS:

1. Confirm the destination. Match the country code and displayed digits to the number you registered. A bank code may go to a different number from the app's login code.
2. Find the receiving line. Keep that SIM enabled and connected to a mobile network. Guac's data connection does not receive ordinary texts addressed to your home SIM.
3. Find out which messages arrive. If no ordinary SMS arrives, ask your home carrier about roaming and incoming-text support. If personal texts arrive but a code does not, contact the app or bank first. Carriers can still filter individual messages, so ask your carrier about automated-message restrictions if the problem continues.
4. Respect the resend timer. Use the service's offered recovery method, such as email or an existing authenticator, where available. Avoid repeated code requests.

If your home carrier cannot receive texts in China, resolve that before departure or arrange an authentication method the relevant service supports. Buying a +86 SIM does not redirect codes already sent to your home number.

Check Wi-Fi Calling separately. Its availability depends on your carrier, device and country. AT&T lists China among countries where its Wi-Fi Calling is unavailable. Confirm your own carrier's supported method before departure.

Get the connection sorted before you fly

Get your apps registered, keep access to the numbers they use, and choose a data plan that covers the trip. Add +86 when you have a specific use for it.

Then arrival day can be about finding your hotel, meeting your driver and deciding what to eat.
